History of Downey Product
MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- It's a typical
American dream story: A man working for someone else comes up with
a million-dollar idea. Taking a deep breath, he leaves his employer
to strike out on his own, and parlay that entreprenurial spirit
into a multi-million dollar business.

While for many this
type of story is just a dream, for one man and his family, the
dream became reality. Gerald Downey was the man, the world's first
aluminum framed tonneau cover was the idea, and Downey Products,
Inc is that multi-million dollar company.
The idea first came to Downey in 1977 when he was working for
a Syracuse, NY canvas company. He was intimately familiar with
the techniques of applying canvas to aluminum frames in the creation
of commerical awnings. While considering a tonneau for his own
truck, he realized he that traditional method of attaching the
cover to the bed (using up to 80 snaps screwed into the truck
bed itself) did not appeal to him, particularly with the harsh
winters Syracuse experiences. Instead he took the idea of a framed
commercial awning and applied it to the bed of his truck.
The benefits of the the design were quickly recognized by Downey's
friends and neighbors who began requesting Downey's framed tonneaus
for their own trucks. Realizing the potential of his creation,
he left his employer and began Downey Canvas Products. Working
solo in a converted gas station, he supplemented business by producing
other canvas products including: commercial awnings, tents, and
canvas bags. Soon, word about the tonneaus spread -- from friend
to friend and the business grew one customer at a time.
By 1985, business was booming and Downey was joined full-time
by his son, Darrin, who had been helping out evenings and weekends.
Darrin realized that there was a greater market for the product
and began showing the framed tonneaus at regional trade shows.
Eventually the tonneau business grew to such an extent that it
became the full focus of the company's efforts. The company then
incorporated as Downey Products, Inc and hired a full-time staff
including Darrin's wife, Sandra. who brought with her years of
sales and purchasing experience. As Vice-President of Sales and
Marketing, Sandra continues Darrin's expansion plans to increase
market share for the product, while Darrin concentrates on the
Research and Development of new products.
Today Downey Products, which relocated to North Carolina in 1995,
employs 21, most of whom followed the company from Syracuse. "We
couldn't have done it without our employees because they gave
us their commitment to produce a quality product and commited
themselves to the relocation," Sandra Downey said.
The firm is headquartered in a 22,000 square foot manufacturing
facility and plans to add another 7,000 square feet in the near
future. Downey said the company moved primarily because of North
Carolina's strong economic environment and because it's centrally
located, enabling quicker distribution to customers from New England
to Florida. "The popularity of the NASCAR racing and other motorsports
in the area are seen as additional opportunities for growth into
new areas for Downey Products, " she added.
"We have a team concept here that is built on the employees caring
as much about the product as we do," said Sandra. "Everyone is
their own boss and sets their own production goals, yet work together
as a team. Everyone enjoys walking through the door in the morning."
The company's origins as a retail installer have given Downey
Products invaluable contact with their customers. Throughout their
20 years of operation, Downey has listened to and evaluated customer
comments and suggestions to continually engineer improvements
in their tonneau covers.
"We decided early on that we didn't want to make the cheapest
tonneau cover, we wanted to provide what would appeal most to
a truck owner," Downey said in summing up the company's philosophy.
"We're not in the business for a one-time sale, we want people
to come back again and again because they know Downey tonneaus
are the best.
Testimonials
- Read what customers are saying about Downey Products
“…I
have told many people about the great product and customer service
that you provide. In addition, I am a Senior Training Specialist
and one of the courses I teach is about customer service. I am
always looking for good and bad examples of customer service to
use in my classes. I have told many classes (which adds up to
hundreds of people) about my good experience with Downey and also
told them that I don’t think there is a better tonneau cover
on the market. You should be proud of the product you put out
and the service that goes with it.”
“Just
wanted to THANK YOU so much. I have told a lot of my friends about
the Downey cover and how great the service is.”
“I
very much appreciate your assistance on this, I will have no hesitation
in recommending your product and excellent customer service to
others. As part of my job, I teach customer service and quality

“Just
wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your efforts and
care in resolving my problem. You are truly a credit to Downey
Products. Not only does your company produce excellent products,
it is obvious by your professionalism that they also have a superb
staff. If Downey ever needs someone to recommend their covers
and or the care shown by their staff please let know.”
“Thank
you very much. I’ll be sure to buy another SST when I get
my new truck in the spring. I also wanted to say that your cover
is the best I’ve ever had. This is my 6th truck and I’ve
had tonneau covers on all of them. In the old days we used to
get them custom made with snaps installed in the truck. Your kits
are not only far superior and better looking but I don’t
have to drill all those holes in my truck. Thanks again.”
“I
ordered your LTD tonneau cover at noon today… I am looking
forward to having it installed on my brand new 2002 Dodge Dakota
extended cab pickup. I thank you for your help…”
“Thank
you! I noticed on your website that this cover had a lifetime
warranty, but I did not expect such prompt and pleasant service.
I will look forward to the arrival of the parts, and you can rest
assured that I will recommend your products to anyone who asks.”
“AGAIN
I THANK YOU FOR YOUR PROMPT REPLY. You guys are very good at your
company.”
“I
wish that all companies could not only stand behind their warranties
but so with the cordiality, convenience and expedience that you
have demonstrated.”
“I
thank you for your prompt reply, and the fact that you are so
willing to take care of your loyal customers. This is one of the
main reasons I only purchase Downey covers for my many vehicles,
all my peers own them, on recommendation from me. Also, my personal
vehicle, along with my work vehicle have downey names riding on
the bed.”
